Rules and Information

The 35th annual Day in the Park arts and crafts festival will feature THE PINEY WOODS JURIED ART EXHIBIT & COMPETITION with entries solicited through Mississippi. Day in the Park is sponsored by The Laurel Arts League in cooperation with the City of Laurel, in Mason Park rain or shine.

Juror: The juror for the 2007 competition is DeAnna Douglas. Douglas was born in Illinois but grew up on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. She received a B.F.A. in commercial art from the University of Southern Mississippi and a M.F.A. in design from the University of Mississippi. She taught for eighteen years at Mississippi State University where she was Professor of Art and also in Oregon and Georgia. While at Mississippi State, she was selected as the outstanding undergraduate teacher in 1990 and served as the 1985 graduation commencement Marshall which is also based on outstanding undergraduate teaching. Douglas is presently Professor of Art at the University of Southern Mississippi where she teaches graphic design. Her work has been in over 79 national juried exhibitions since 1973 with work being shown at such museums and galleries as the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris, National Museum of Umbria, Italy the Paris City Hall, France, Tampa Museum of Art and the Montgomery Art Center in West Palm Beach.

Awards: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places ($300, $200, $100, respectively) and two $50 Honorable Mentions wil be awarded at the juror's discretion. Sales will be strongly encouraged.

Eligibility: Entry is open to any artist who has reached the age of 18 by March 1, 2007. Active members of the Laurel Arts League are not eligible. Associate members are eligible.

Entry Fee: A non-refundable fee of $10 per entry entitles the artist to enter as many works as they wish. Checks should be made payable to The Laurel Arts League.

Rules for Entry: Entries must be submitted by CD (no slides). Selections will be made by CD only. No more than one image per item for two-dimensional works, and no more than three images per item for three-dimensional works. Each CD must be clearly marked for top and front of work and must list the artits's name, title of work, dimensions, medium and date(s) of completion.The deadline for receipt of CDs is April 16th. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be mailed no later than April 21st. CDs will not be returned and will be retained for permanent records. The Entry Form must be filled out and returned along with the entry fee, and CD to The Piney Woods Juried Art Exhibit & Competition, c/o Phyllis Johnson, P.O. Box 1409, Laurel, MS 39441-1409. The Laurel Arts League reserves the right to reject any work which differs significantly from the images submitted on theCD.

Specifications: Works in the following media may be submitted. paintings (all media), original prints, graphics, collage, photography, pottery and sculpture (all media except wax). Works must not exceed 72 inches in any dimension including frame or weigh more than 100 pounds. All works must be ready to display. Paintings must be framed and wired for hanging. The back of each work (or bottom of sculpture) must be labeled with the artist's name, address, title of work, dimensions, weight and medium. Only original artwork completed within the past two years will be accepted, no kits will be permitted. Previously exhibited works will not be accepted.

Accepted Works: Accepted works must be checked in 7:00 a.m - 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5th, at the Juried Art arena, Mason Park, Laurel. If the artist is unable to hand-deliver accepted work, the work may be shipped by commercial carrier, prepaid and insured at the artist's expense for arrival no later than May 3rd at Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, 5th Avenue at 7th Street, Laurel, MS 39440. Shipped works must be securely packed in crates. Work sent by bus will not be accepted.  The Laurel Arts League will hand deliver shipped works to Mason Park by 8:30 a.m., May 5th. Judging will take place May 5th, from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. with public viewing from 10:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Return of Works: Artists will be responsible for removal of works from Mason Park from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on May 5th. The Laurel Arts League will not be responsible for returning the artwork.

Liability: All works are submitted are at the artist's risk. The Laurel Arts League and/or its representative canno assume responsibility for any loss or damage incurring before, during or after the exhibit, however, all possible care will be taken.

A breakfast reception will be held in honor of the artists next to the Juried Art arena, Mason Park, on the morning of the event -- Saturday, May 5, 2007, 8:00-10:00 a.m.
