The Laurel Arts League was organized in November 1969 and held its first meeting in the Art Studio of the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. Officers were elected; constitution and by-laws were adopted. Early projects of the League included a Laurel Awards night for the Laurel Little Theatre, the organization of the LRMA docent program, sponsorship of the Sunday at the Museum series and support of the Mississippi Art Colony, then located in Stafford Springs. In 1973, the Arts League presented its first Day in the Park, which remains a popular annual event. Held each May, Day in the Park features high quality arts and crafts, varied musical entertainment, enjoyable children's activities, and delicious food. The festival draws thousands to Mason Park each year. In 1975, the Arts League sponsored a Tri-State Regional Art Exhibition in cooperation with the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. In 1978, Laurel Collects was initiated with an exhibition featuring paintings and prints. This was followed by locally inspired exhibits of decorative arts, portraits and textiles. In 1984, the League's first fund-raiser was held, a presentation by nationally known lifestyle entrepreneur Martha Stewart. A Southern design seminar in 1987 featured speakers from Southern Accents and Southern Living magazines. Today, Laurel Arts League projects include Day in the Park, a children's art contest, support for art departments of area public schools, and scholarships. We assist the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art with various programs, including Very Special Arts Festival, Heritage Arts Festival and Emerging Artists Clothesline Show. The Laurel Arts League receives funding primarily from donations, membership fees, fund-raisers and Day in the Park. Arts League members also donate art-related items to sell at Artzy, our booth at the Southern Antique Gift Mall, 317 Central Avenue in Laurel . |
